Treated right, a cowhide leather apron lasts for years and only looks better with age. Here's how to keep yours in top shape.
Wipe it down with a dry or slightly damp cloth at the end of the day to remove dust, debris, and shavings. That's it for routine care — no soaking, no machine washing, ever.
For tougher marks, use a cloth lightly dampened with water and a small amount of mild soap. Wipe gently, then dry with a clean cloth. Avoid harsh detergents, solvents, or bleach — they strip the natural oils from the leather.
Every few months (or whenever the leather starts to look dry), apply a quality leather conditioner or balm with a soft cloth. This keeps the hide supple, prevents cracking, and deepens the patina. A little goes a long way.
Let it air-dry naturally, away from direct heat or sunlight. Never use a hair dryer, heater, or direct flame to speed it up — high heat warps and stiffens leather. Once dry, condition it.
Small spark marks are normal on a working apron and part of its character. Brush off debris and condition the area to keep it from drying out.
Hang it on a hook or peg rather than folding it, so it keeps its shape and doesn't crease. Store somewhere dry and ventilated.
The golden rule: wipe, condition, hang. Do those three things and your apron will outlast the project you bought it for.
